How to become an Embryologist?


Embryology is a study of development of embryos. This field has been widely grown in India in the recent past. With the advancement in the medical science particularly in the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology, more and more medical candidates are interested to learn more about test-tube babies and in vitro fertilization. Responsibilities of an Embryologist:
The main duties and responsibilities of an embryologist include collecting eggs from patients at the right time of the cycle, inseminating them and checking whether they have been fertilized. An embryologist has to ensure the success of fertilization process. During the IVF treatment, an embryologist assesses the quality of the embryo by grading it and monitoring its development. The embryo, created from the male partner’s sperm and female’s donor is then transferred back into the woman’s uterus. An embryologist plays a vital role during the in vitro fertilization program (IVF) that leads the journey to successful pregnancy for a couple who otherwise would not have been able to conceive. Embryologists mainly work in a clean, hygienic working environment, predominantly in laboratories and operating theatres.

Being a clinical embryologist at a fertility clinic, an embryologist should have done clinical embryology training and is also responsible for doing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedures where sperm is directly injected into an egg. At IVF clinics, they work with a highly skilled team of IVF specialists, nurses and other medical professionals from various medical fields.

Basic Educational Requirements:
An individual who want to become an embryologist need a bachelor's degree in biology or biomedicine and a master's degree in reproductive science or clinical science.
